Visitors to our school often comment on the unique atmosphere of The Gardner School. Small class sizes promote individualized instruction; the beautiful campus allows teachers to use all facets of the environment to stimulate learning; Art, Music, PE and Spanish promote the nurturing of the whole child and, infusing everything that happens, a sense of belonging and ownership inspired by a warm and caring community. The Gardner School does indeed proved a remarkable environment for learning. We hope this website provides some sense of the power of that experience and we encourage you to visit us to see ‘a different school of thought’ in action.

April 14th and 15th, 2010

As many of you know, conferences will be happening at school next week. This year, all conferences from Mazama I through Tahoma will be Student Led Conferences. This represents a change in format for some of us and we would like to take a moment to explain some of the thinking behind the change.

For many years in schools, parent-teacher conferences have been the primary means of parent-teacher

communication when discussing student progress. The parent and the teacher share and discuss and plan for the future but unfortunately the person being planned for, shared and discussed is noticeably absent from the discussion. Student Led Conferences hope to redress that imbalance by facilitating a dialogue between parent and child and by helping students assume greater control of their development in school.

As we planned for Student Led Conferences, it became clear, that the benefits were equally as applicable to our younger students and so the decision was taken to use Student Led Conferences across the school. The format and structure will be slightly different depending on the age of the child but the involvement of each Gardner School student in the process of self evaluation and reflection will be the same.

The April conferences have been designed, at different levels, to deepen and increase

personal responsibility for academic/social progress and development

personal self-evaluation and reflection

personal organizational and oral communication skills

self-confidence

We hope you will find them informative and enjoyable and that they give you a deeper understanding of your child and their work at school.
