Patrice Ann Schanck

Klickitat (Grade 5 and 6) teacher

Patrice was born in Virginia, where her early exposure to civility, civics and the American Revolution framed her ideas about the need to balance the virtue of good manners, the desire for personal liberty and the consideration of the greater social good. She explores the dynamic tension between these ideas today in her teaching.
She moved to the Pacific Northwest when she was eight. As a student at Catlin Gabel School she was exposed to truly progressive American education; the seeds of her philosophy as a teacher were laid then. She went on to get a B.A. from Reed College in English Literature and, later, a Masters Degree in Education from Lewis and Clark College.

As an educator, a belief in mutual respect between student and teacher, in-depth inquiry and creativity is her credo. She loves being at The Gardner School, where she can do the kind of teaching in which she believes.

Patrice has had a number of interesting life experiences, all of which enriches her teaching: These include being an acoustic musician, a newspaper reporter, an hospice intern in Scotland, a life-coach, a lecturer and workshop leader, a voracious reader and a free-lance writer.

Patrice is married to a musician and has one daughter who is eleven years old.
